Bij TSC zijn er twee verschillende genen bekend die het syndroom kunnen veroorzaken: TSC-1 en TSC-2. TSC-2 komt vaker voor ( bij 8 op de 10 mensen) dan TSC-1 (bij 2 op de 10 mensen).
