Ear infections an hypersensitivity to certain sounds

Characteristic of WBS are frequent ear infections in the first years of life. These infections are recurrent and difficult to treat. Repeated infections cause fluid to accumulate behind the eardrums, making them less able to hear. Chronic ear infections decrease at toddler age. 

Also typical of the syndrome is hypersensitivity to certain sharp and bright sounds, such as the sound of a hoover, hairdryer, drill, popping balloons, sirens, hand clapping or sudden laughter. This is called ‘hyperacusis’ and occurs in 70-90% of people with WBS. Upon hearing it, they make a typical movement by placing the hands over the ears. This reaction is explained by the fact that these children have a lower hearing threshold. Curiously, at the same time, they are enormously attracted to these sounds. They also have difficulty with crowds and noise. A quiet, peaceful environment is therefore recommended.
